Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (Iron Slag)

This product can be used as a pozzolan in combination with cement. When mixed with cement, iron slag powder reacts with calcium hydroxide (a byproduct of cement hydration) to form a secondary gel. Over time, this secondary gel combines with the primary gel from cement hydration, enhancing the durability of concrete and significantly improving its resistance to corrosive agents. Due to its ability to reduce hydration heat, it is particularly recommended for mass concrete pours and construction in hot climates.

Additionally, this product can serve as a raw material for geopolymer cement production.

Studies indicate that up to 40% of cement can be replaced with this material.

Production Process of Blast Furnace Slag

Iron Slag Powder is an inevitable by-product of pig iron production in blast furnaces. When iron ore is melted at extremely high temperatures (approximately 1500°C), impurities rise to the surface as molten slag. The pinnacle of technology and artistry lies in converting this molten material into a valuable product.

Bana Bonyan utilizes a rapid chilling process, quenching the molten slag with a high-pressure water jet. This rapid cooling prevents the formation of a crystalline structure, resulting in a stable glassy (non-crystalline) substance with latent pozzolanic and cementitious properties. The output of this stage is sand-like granules known as ‘granulated slag.’ In the final stage, these granules are ground in highly advanced and precise mills to achieve the desired fineness (approximately 4600 cm²/g), producing the very fine and active GGBFS powder.

The optimal chemical composition of this product (including 35-40% SiO₂, 35-40% CaO, along with aluminum and magnesium oxides) complies with ASTM C989 standards, falling into grades 80, 100, and 120. Bana Bonyan focuses on the highest grade, delivering an exceptional product.

Activation of Slag for Cement Use

Research shows that locally produced slag can be effectively used in cement mixtures—provided it is rapidly cheald (rapidly cooled) after extraction from the furnace and ground to cement-like fineness (GGBFS). This process enhances its reactivity, allowing it to function as an efficient pozzolan in concrete.

Through collaboration with an iron smelting plant, we produce GGBFS by rapid chealding and finely grinding the slag. This treatment significantly increases its reactivity, making it suitable for high-performance concrete applications.
